Sierras Sierras Sierras

Day 68 8/19
Mileage 21
Camped at West Branch Nelson Creek

We have truly arrived in the Sierras! The granite buttes and tall Sugar Pines seem to be welcoming me home, in a way. It's making me all the more excited to get into the heart of the mountains. We had our first almost bear encounter last night! We didn't see it, but we heard it splashing around, and the mostly-eaten ear of corn that the campsite's previous guests had left was gone in the morning. We're going most of the way to Sierra City tomorrow. Exciting! We arrived at our campsite at the W Branch of Nelson Creek to find the creek bone-dry. Luckily, there was a small trickle of water about a quarter mile south where we were able to fill up.

10:00pm update: Monsters! There are monsters in the woods! Something large is walking around, making lots of noise, circling our camp. A deer? A bear, maybe? I think it's probably a monster. The last northbounders told us that deer activity was high here, as if they had been in our campsite more than three minutes. Everything seems so much louder at night. Even the scuffling of a chipmunk is deafening.
